Love is Sweet: Valentine’s Day 2019

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Love is in the air.  I love this time of year.  Spreading JOY, LOVE and GOOD.

Doing small acts of kindness continue to spread only positive vibes.

These high school seniors ROCKED this Valentine’s inspired shoot.  These girls have developed friendship and respect for other girls from high schools all over the valley.  It was so cool to see how everyone opened up and had a great time!

An Elegant Wedding: Haley

I first met Haley when I was an account executive with Stila and she was working at a cosmetic counter.  I loved her energy and positive attitude to learn about new products.  Her passion to help those looking for makeup guidance was uplifting.

I was completely surprised but honored to be asked to do Haley’s makeup for her big day.

We did a trial on the day of her bridal shower- pretty in shades of pink.  We kept a neutral lip and made her cheeks pop.  On the big day we changed up the looks slightly and added a little more depth to warm it up.  I LOVED how these shots turned out at the beautiful venue The Elegant Barn!

T-shirt Tuesday! Sara Bishop

Sara was one of the first people I connected with as a friend and professional in the industry when I moved to Arizona almost 8 years ago. Meeting through a mutual friend, Sara and I have worked together on several projects; even traveling to NYC for New York Fashion Week last year. I am grateful for her friendship and the beautiful images she creates.

If you need a wedding photographer or the perfect picture for your Christmas card, take a look at her site and give her a call. Sara Bishop Photography

A little about Sara:

Why is this your favorite t-shirt?: This is my favorite t-shirt because it’s comfortable and it’s a dress! So I can wear it for pretty much any occasion.

Tell me a little about yourself: I am a wedding and portrait photographer based in Phoenix, Arizona. I love coffee and gluten free dessert. My favorite season is fall! I absolutely love the desert and Arizona. This state is so beautiful. Photographing in the desert is amazing. I love being a photographer and connecting with my clients. It’s my favorite!

Makeup Trends

I was asked to give some insight  to an intern at a bridal magazine on what the trends are in bridal makeup for fall and winter 2011.  And since I was feverishly typing,  I thought I would make it my blog update (since its been ages….) as well.        Here. It. Goes.

The looks for brides have always been a reflection of the bride herself.  But I like to do what I call (and have been told I should trademark-hmmmm), and many brides agree, “kicked up natural” makeup.  A look where the BRIDE enters the room before her MAKEUP does.  Enough for pictures and brings out the features of the bride, but is not too heavy or dramatic.

I have noticed a trend for period makeup.  The classic winged out liner, subtle cheek and red rich lip has been a request.  This is a great look for any season wedding.  I love this look because looking back on pictures in two, five or 10 years, the look will not be as dated (i.e. blue eye shadow and bold lip of the 80’s).

Going into the fall and winter, the soft browns and burgundy family of colors becomes a popular palette I work from.  Plums as well.  A subtle smokey eye with a pop of color makes a beautiful fall wedding look.  Although the smokey eye in the brown, grey or plum family is always a staple look for brides, I tend to do more when the temperatures cool down.  I have had few requests as of recent for the deep, grey/black, smokey eye.  Whether that is because it is dating the era or more brides are going for a more natural look, the trend seems to be toned down.

Many brides are also doing false lashes.  Added to the eye, they make the eyes stand out in addition to the eye shadows.  The brides that do not chose them are usually ones that are worried they will not look natural or they wear minimal makeup and feel it would be too much.  There are so many lash choices that there is one for everyone- from the minimalist to the deep smokiest of eye looks.

Wedding Season Makeup

It’s that time of year again. Wedding season.  I love wedding season.  I have said it many times before, but I really enjoy doing wedding makeup.  It’s a great time to play up the brides features and create a “kicked up natural” look.  I’ve coined that phrase and I stand by it.  I truly feel a bride should look like herself, but with enough makeup that she shows up in pictures.  Looking back at pictures in five or ten years, I want the brides I do makeup for to say that they felt beautiful but still looked like themselves.

Airbrushing makeup is a great technique to help with the natural look.  It evens out skin tones, and covers any blemishes.   Blush color and contours look beautiful over the airbrushed skin.   Photographs look great and usually need little post editing.

Anyone who has worked with me, or has seen my makeup kit, knows I work primarily with MAC Cosmetics.  I am very knowledgeable with the products and see the longevity the look has on the skin.  I often get asked, what lip color is the best for my wedding day?  Depending on the client and her preference, my answer is usually VIVA GLAM V from MAC.  A pinky, neutral color that can be changed by adding different lip liners and gloss.  And it supports a great cause- MAC AIDS FUND- which has donated millions of dollars to adults and children living with HIV and AIDS.  Great lip color and supporting our world?  The best.   Take a look at the link to learn more

In addition to a necessary lip color for touch ups, there is one other thing that is a must for wedding day touch ups.  BLOT POWDER.  A translucent powder that takes away shine, but doesn’t add a caked-on feel of other powders.  There are varying shades that will match any skin tone.

As far as other wedding day necessities, check out this detailed link about must-haves on your big day.

As far as when to book your makeup artist, that depends on the bride.  I have brides booked a year or more in advance, with a trial done closer to their date.  And others that book a month or so before their day.  I recommend contacting your perspective makeup artist six months or so before the date.  Availability is usually better, and it gives the opportunity to get to know who you are working with.   Trials that can be done, if at all possible, at the time of the hair trial show a better idea of the wedding day look.  It is easier to envision with both aspects coming together.
